Agenda & Proceedings:
Social
- Showcase: 25 people attended! The concert was glorious. People were pleased with the scholarship draw for the conducting symposium. It eventually became a dance party!
Academic
- Student Mentoring: Jacqueline Leclair sent Heather an email about a new student mentoring initiative. They want to set up older students with incoming first years to help them out with any problems they might have. She is looking to do it informally next year and then eventually train students for next years. She wants to pair students with someone else who plays their instrument. She is looking at this for performance and faculty to start with. She wants to meet with us, so Naomi (as incoming President) will set up a meeting with her.
- Conducting Ensembles: Alain wants to set up another ensemble at McGill so that more students can play in an ensemble and so we can get more conducting experience. Alain is going to start talking to the performance department about it and he wants us to talk to Lisa about it. Quite a few people would also like to split the lab band concert so it is not as long.
- Student Advising: Since the beginning of March Colin has been meeting with Adelina and Jacqueline Leclair to talk about implementing student advising in the faculty of music. Originally Colin wanted to offer peer advising and peer mentoring for the faculty. Colin contacted Egidia to see what issues students go to the 7th floor for that do not require authority. He sent to Jacqueline Leclair who was excited about the project. Right now the majority of advising for music ed goes on between students informally with occasional insight from Lisa and the faculty of education. Colin wants to encourage more communication between education and music.
Professional Development
- Music for People Workshop: Irene has contacted us about the workshops she wants to run in the fall. It would be sort of like vocal tech without the theory. She has also contacted MUSA. We are supportive of this idea but we do not have the funds to pay for this series of workshops. We hope to get the MUSA Student Life Fund to use it or have MUSA fund the workshops.
General
- First Year Buddies: We have quite a few people who are willing to do this. Heather emailed Lisa and she said she would give us the list but didn’t actually send it so Heather will remind her.
- Drum Circle: There were a few issues with the room booking being next to horn juries. We moved the circles to various other rooms for each hour and it worked out well in the end. Kathleen’s high school especially appreciated them.
- Conducting Scholarship: After the Showcase we found out that Carmelia is not a minor in music ed (like we thought) which means she’s not part of MEdUSA so she is not eligible. At the Showcase Heather drew two other names and the next person is Colin who will receive the money.
Next Meeting: Next school year!
Adjournment: Naomi motions to close the meeting at 18:11, Chris seconds.
