Welcome: Meeting begins at 16h44 motioned by Liz, seconded by Dan.
Announcements: None
Approval of Minutes: Becky motions to approve, Nathan seconds.
Approval of Agenda: Liz motions to approve, Sam seconds.
Agenda & Proceedings:
- VP Social:
- First Year Social Event: Dan presents his proposal for this event.
- Ideas for mixers: In order to get your drink, each person needs to find someone to fill a requirement: ie “someone who plays the flute …” and get to know them a little bit. Nathan suggests that MEdUSA council also makes more of an effort to get to know the new students.
- Becky will get new bowls for the mixed drinks.
- Sean will take care of publicity and the playlist for the evening.
- Council discusses the options for beverages. We decide to remove the wine, and purchase more quantities of the mixed drinks.
- Start time is 6:30pm.
- Liz will pick up the keys for the rooms (including kitchen).
- VP Professional Development:
- QBA Mentoring: We have 3 confirmed presenters, we need to provide them with dates. Workshops include: Starting a Guitar Program (Miller & Landry); Small Unbalanced Bands (Schumer and Campbell); “It’s the Little Things That Count” (Julie Gentilly); Teresa Lescaudron is also willing to present. Melissa Anne Ledo could also present about curriculum.
- Potential Dates are (Mondays) October 15th, November 12th, January 14th, February 18th, March 25th.
- MEdUSA Workshops: Council brainstorms additional ideas for MEdUSA-funded workshops: Native Canadian drumming & singing, Gospel Choir, How to teach private lessons, Elementary Music Classroom Management.
- VP Academic:
- EdUS Report:
- Sweatshirts ordered last year exist! EdUS will receive and pay for the order, and Sarah will pick them up at the next meeting.
- EdUS will find out which students are in Music Education and provide us with information on what amount of student fee funds we will receive.
- Website: EdUS is hiring someone to redesign and maintain their website. Sarah will find out more about how much this might cost for us, and we’ll decide from there if that is something that interests us.
- MUSA Report:
- Sarah will read the minutes for MUSA meetings, as they occur at the same time as ours, and report back.
- Jazz Pedagogy:
- Sarah heard back from Lisa about this. The course cancellation was based on low registration and a last minute absence of the instructor (Gordon Foote).
- QBA Report:
- Meet and Greet: The QBA had to limit their invites for this to primarily members. Students in Lisa’s “Issues in Music Education” class are invited, as is the MEdUSA Executive. Liz will email Lisa about this.
- QYWE: The QBA Youth Wind Ensemble is looking for a new ensemble manager. Liz will post advertisements about this and include it in the E-News.
- QPAT: There will be more ‘music teacher appropriate’ workshops at the QPAT convention this fall. Liz will include information about these in later months’ E-News.
- Music Ed student list: On its way from Lisa. Next meeting we’ll decide when the deadline for first year rep application submission is.
- Minor in Music Ed: Becky updates that those doing a minor in Music Education do not pay EdUS fees. Council discusses the options for including minor students, and decide to continue allowing non-Music-Ed students to workshops (unless space is very limited), and to continue the RSVP+1 policy with social events.
- VP Finance:
- Young Alumni Panel un-paid wine order: Lisa will follow up with this.
- MUSA VP Finance is working on getting the list of Music Ed students so that we know our budget. The $120 unused from last year’s budget will most likely be available to us in addition to this year’s budget.
- Website: Liz has heard back from Weebly about the payment to keep the domain name, and they are ‘looking into it’.
- Copycode: Liz contacted Valerie McConnell about this and is waiting to hear back.
- Extra Projects: For next week, everyone will come with their decisions for which extra project they will take on. Additional ideas include: Constitution update, Scholarship/bursary, Merchandise manager, Footbook, HR Database.
- Next Meeting Time/Place: Monday, Sept 24th, 16h30.
Adjournment: Liz motions to adjourn meeting, Dan seconds. Meeting is adjourned at 18h22.
